Cash is a habit, not a report

A thirteen-week cash view is a start. It is useless if nobody in the business is allowed to stop a payment that misses a gate.

Looking out over the city while thinking through cash gates

We are often asked for a cash report. What the business usually needs is a rule. If debtor days go past forty-five, hiring waits. If VAT is due in ten days, the marketing spend does not leave on Friday.

The spreadsheet is the easy part. The hard part is naming who can say no, and making sure the board will back them when a popular project is the thing that has to wait.

Gates beat commentary

Commentary is what you write after the money has gone. A gate is a number, an owner, and a consequence. We will not install a cash pack unless those three things are written down.

If you want the habit, start with one gate this month. Not twelve. One. Then keep it.
